Research direction

Start with .github/dependabot.yml and compare its pip configuration with pyproject.toml, then check Dependabot’s support for the dependency layout and groups described in the issue. Done means the stale .github/constraints reference is removed or correctly redirected, with the chosen dependency-update behavior verified.

Description

maintenance

At the time of writing our current main branch has some stale code in .github/dependabot.yml that refers to the .github/constraints path that was removed in gh-127.

We could either remove that block to completely stop getting automatic pip "ecosystem" updates on our dependencies (it has already stopped, since that path no longer exists), or redirect it at the pyproject.toml file. I believe if we do the latter we'd need to check if dependabot can even handle i.e., dependency groups, etc.
