Research direction

Start by locating the synthesis/propose call and the code that assembles its prompt, then trace how failures become AcpxError and exit 1. Compare the failure path with the separate skillsDir workspace-copy issue mentioned in the report. Done means an oversized prompt failure gives users a clear size-related hint rather than an indistinguishable generic error.

Description

ready-for-pr

Setup: backpass 0.1.8, codex agent via acpx.

What happens: when the synthesis/propose call fails because the prompt is oversized (in our case inflated by the skillsDir workspace-copy issue I filed separately), the run ends with a bare AcpxError and exit 1. There is no indication that prompt size was the cause, which makes the failure look like an auth or harness problem.

Suggested fix: log the assembled prompt size (bytes/tokens estimate) on synthesis failure — or preflight it against a configurable ceiling with a clear error — so users can distinguish "prompt too big" from "agent broken".
