Research direction

Find the test_autograder_submission and rerun_submission_autograder entry points and compare how each launches the autograder with the student submission path changed in #375. Update both paths to use the same limited user as student runs. Done when Test autograder, Rerun, and student submissions run under that user; the issue does not name specific files or tests.

Description

Student submissions and the instructor's "Test autograder" button don't run the autograder the same way.

Since #375, student submissions run the autograder as a limited user (nobody, uid 65534), not root. Two other paths still run it as root:

  • Test autograder (test_autograder_submission)
  • Rerun (rerun_submission_autograder)

So if an autograder needs root while it runs (for example, it installs a package or writes outside /autograder), the instructor's test passes, but it fails for every student. A rerun can also give a different score than the student's original submission.

Fix: run Test autograder and Rerun as the same limited user that submissions use.
