Summary

On https://beta.platejs.org/docs/footnote, the four footnote references in the demo's starting content read 1[1], 2[2], 1[1] and 3[3]. On https://platejs.org/docs/footnote they read [1], [2], [1] and [3]. The leading number cannot be selected on its own, and a delete removes both. A reference inserted with [^4] shows only [4].

Reproduction

Repro 1: open the page, Safari

An agent ran this in Safari 27.0 on macOS on 2026-10-21, as part of Sin's assigned pages, and recorded it.

  1. Open https://beta.platejs.org/docs/footnote.
  2. Look at the references in the demo.

Result: they read 1[1], 2[2], 1[1] and 3[3], on each of five reloads. platejs.org shows [1], [2], [1] and [3].

Sin confirmed it by hand on 2026-10-23 (Beijing time). The number before the bracket cannot be selected by moving the caret, a delete removes both, and a new reference typed as [^4] is not doubled.

Repro 2: Chromium

An agent opened the page on the live Beta in headless Chromium 149 (Playwright) on 2026-10-24. There is no recording. Each reference is a sup element whose text is 1[1], holding a button whose text is [1], and the same for 2, 1 and 3.

Expected

Each reference shows its number once, as [1], as on platejs.org and as a reference inserted with [^4] does.

Actual

Each starting reference shows its number twice.

Environment

  • Exact next commit/Beta package version: NOT_ENOUGH_INFO. The page does not show its build.
  • Repro 1: Safari 27.0 on macOS, 2026-10-21.
  • Repro 2: Chromium 149.0.7827.55 (Playwright, headless) on macOS, 2026-10-24.
  • Not tried in Firefox or on a phone.

Caveat

From a reading of the code on next a32ed63c78:

  • The demo value gives each reference a text child holding its number. apps/www/src/registry/examples/values/footnote-value.tsx:13-15 is <hfootnoteReference ref="1"><htext>1</htext></hfootnoteReference>, and refs 2, 1 and 3 follow the same shape.
  • The reference component renders its children and then its own [{ref}] button (apps/www/src/registry/components/editor/footnote.tsx:145 and :186), so the child text 1 shows before [1].
  • A reference inserted from the combobox likely has an empty text child, which would explain why [^4] shows once. So the fix is probably the demo value. Not tried as a code change.

Evidence

  • Repro 1: the agent's recording, 0:10: the page, then a zoomed screenshot of the result, with the last frame held. A record number in its title is covered.
