Pillow has OpenJPEG as an optional dependency, to support JPEG2000 images.
Three months ago, OpenJPEG declared itself to be unmaintained.
This repository should be considered unmaintained. Commits may appear from time to time depending on committer interest and mood, but no committer currently feel responsible to regularly review tickets or pull requests.
What should Pillow do about this?
a) Nothing. Wait and see if anyone else decides to maintain it
b) Start packaging the OpenJPEG main branch (currently a month old) in our wheels, instead of the last release (currently 2.5.4 from Sep 2025)
c) Explore options for a replacement library. JasPer? Grok?
d) Drop support for JPEG2000 images
