What happened?

Environment: FrankenPHP v1.12.7, PHP 8.5.11 ZTS, Caddy v2.11.4, image …-php8.5.11-alpine (Alpine 3.24.2, musl), x86-64, host Linux 7.2.9 (Fedora), Docker. Laravel Octane (octane:start --server=frankenphp --watch), Octane builds the watch directive for app/, bootstrap/, config/**/*.php, database/**/*.php, public/**/*.php, resources/**/*.php, routes/, composer.lock, .env. xdebug is loaded (mode=debug, start_with_request=trigger); JIT is disabled (turning JIT off did not change anything).

Symptom: the whole frankenphp process dies with SIGSEGV, roughly 3 runs out of 10 of a Pest suite that creates and deletes files under the watched tree. The container restarts; the Octane artisan process exits with code 0 (apparently Process::getExitCode() returns null for a signalled child), so the crash looks like a clean exit. Dozens of core dumps over three weeks in the development container; the one analysed in detail is below. A few crashes in containers without watch have no core and may be unrelated. With --watch removed: 10 of 10 suite runs clean, no dumps. Editing or touch-ing a single watched file under HTTP load does not trigger it.

No Go panic report: coredumpctl shows Signal: 11 (SEGV) si_code: SI_TKILL, thread php-N or frankenphp, frames only in the Go runtime (cgo trampolines) and musl's thread start. The SIGSEGV happens in a thread created by C code, where Go has no context, so the runtime re-raises it with tgkill (dieFromSignal) and prints nothing. The container log has no trace of the crash; the original fault must be read from the signal frame on the stack in the core file.

Real fault: extracted from the signal frame in the core (gdb Python: scan the crashed thread's stack for siginfo with si_signo == 11, then the ucontext registers whose cr2 equals si_addr): SEGV_MAPERR, si_addr = cr2 = 0x7f44b86633d8, rip inside /usr/local/lib/libwatcher-c.so.0 at offset 0x12cfc, in detail::wtr::watcher::adapter::inotify::do_ev_recv(...)::{lambda}::operator():

This is defer_dm_rm_wd::~defer_dm_rm_wd() in e-dant/watcher 0.14.5 (watch.hpp, inotify adapter): ke.wd_to_p.erase(p_at); … ke.p_to_wd.find(p_at->second) reads p_at->second after erasing it (source). Full analysis, disassembly and a suggested fix are in the upstream report: <link to e-dant/watcher issue>. The library file is libwatcher-c.so.0.14.5; 0.14.5 (23 Feb 2026) is the latest release and master has the same code.

On musl only? musl's allocator unmaps a fully freed group, so the stale read faults; glibc would probably read stale memory silently (not tested). That may be why this is not widely reported.

Request: (1) bump or patch the bundled libwatcher-c once upstream fixes it (a one-line change: copy the path before erase); (2) mention in the watch docs that the file watcher can crash the process on musl images; (3) if useful, a debug note on how to recover the real fault from a core when Go re-raises the signal.

Related, but not the same: #1087 (crash during file-watcher worker restart), #2568 (reboot of threads, 1.12.5+, with pecl_http — not loaded here), #2688. Happy to share the extraction script and more register/disassembly details. (The core file itself contains application secrets, so we can't publish it.)
