This tool repeatedly broke my system requiring a rescue from a live ISO

I am not sure yet whether there's something unique to my system/configuration, or there's something more easily reproducible going on. Every cycle of testing this takes a long time and is a big pain, and I'm not sure what to even look for, so some pointers would help to pinpoint the problem.

The short version: on my Linux Mint 22.3 Xfce, every single time I have tried to use this tool (to enable the menu with 10s timeout), it has caused grub to fail to load. After the BIOS, the screen just goes black and never advances. These are the settings I've tried to set:

For starters, I'd like someone else to simply try to apply these simple settings using this tool on a fresh Linux Mint 22.3 Xfce installation (with updates), and see if they get the same result.
