$__multiVar(qualifier,$var) expands each selected value to qualifier:value without quotes. If a value contains a space, GitHub search treats only the first word as the qualifier value.

With a multi-value variable labels set to good first issue and bug, the query is:open $__multiVar(label,$labels) expands to:

is:open label:good first issue label:bug

GitHub reads this as the label good plus the free text first issue, so the query misses the issues labeled good first issue.

What you expected

The macro produces is:open label:"good first issue" label:bug, which is how GitHub search expects multi-word qualifier values.

How to reproduce

  1. Expand the macro: is:open $__multiVar(label,$labels) with labels set to good first issue and bug produces is:open label:good first issue label:bug.
  2. Run both forms against the GitHub search API, for example on grafana/grafana: is:open label:good first issue returns 0 issues, and is:open label:"good first issue" returns 18.
