Preview of character variants / Create own character variants?

I use Visual Studio (not "Code") for software development and I have been looking for an alternative monospace font for years.
Its characters should be designed in a way that they can be distinguished easily, e.g. 1, l (lower L), I (upper i), | (vertical bar), 0 (zero), O (upper letter o).
I found the font Monoid some years ago and I really like it... unfortunately, it's not completely monospaced. That makes it partly useless for me.

Today I found Monaspace, which looks promising. But in Visual Studio or Notepad++, I cannot use the character variants. From reading your website, I cannot find a way how to download font files with character variants, and I haven't found a preview of the variants either. So I still do not know whether it fits my requirements.

• Is there a preview of character variants?
• I am not a font designer. How difficult is it to add own character variants like the lower L from Monoid?
• I also plan to use it in a PLC code development software, based on Visual Studio. Keywords are automatically displayed in bold there. Monoid had issues with bold characters, printing them wider than regular characters. How does Monaspace behave here? Do regular and bold characters have the same width?
• I don't know how the developer of Monoid did it on his website... you can configure the character variants and ligatures to use on his website and then download the desired variant of his font. Maybe this would be an idea for Monaspace?
