説明

bug

After the dataplane pod is deleted and recreated on dataplane v0.30.0, the gateway never forwards again: BGP and BFD to both spines stay down because the taps enp2s1 and enp2s2 come back with only an IPv6 link-local address. Without a restart the same gateway passes the gateway release tests.

Expected

The gateway recovers within the 1m30s convergence window the test allows. On v0.29.0 the same gateway rt jobs passed.

How to reproduce

Run the fabricator Custom VLAB workflow on the branch pr/auto/dataplane-bump with gateway on, releasetest on and releasetest_regex "Gateway Dataplane and FRR Pod Restart". The test deletes the dataplane pods and waits for Ready, which comes 5s later.

https://github.com/githedgehog/fabricator/actions/runs/39918248631 (restart test alone, fails)
https://github.com/githedgehog/fabricator/actions/runs/39918642114 (every gateway test except the restart, passes)

Gateway-1 taps in the passing run:

7: enp2s1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 9100 qdisc fq_codel state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000
    inet 172.30.128.13/31 brd 255.255.255.255 scope global enp2s1
8: enp2s2: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 9100 qdisc fq_codel state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000
    inet 172.30.128.29/31 brd 255.255.255.255 scope global enp2s2

Gateway-1 taps 3 minutes after the restart in the failing run:

45: enp2s1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 9100 qdisc fq_codel state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000
    inet6 fe80::e20:12ff:fefe:201/64 scope link proto kernel_ll
46: enp2s2: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 9100 qdisc fq_codel state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000
    inet6 fe80::e20:12ff:fefe:202/64 scope link proto kernel_ll

BGP to the spines on gateway-1, healthy and after the restart (counters do not move in later captures):

spine-01(172.30.128.12) 4      65100      1400       741      321    0    0 00:04:39           16       26 N/A
spine-01(172.30.128.12) 4      65100       144        72        0    0    0 00:02:58       Active        0 N/A

After the restart the dataplane received packets on the underlay NICs and transmitted none (pkt-rx 71 and 73, pkt-tx 0), and the spines show BFD down with DETECTION_TIMEOUT and Remote ID 0. The dataplane logs these right after the restart, on both gateways, and does not log them at normal start:

ERROR routerIO dataplane_routing::interfaces::iftablerw: 265: Failed to add address 172.30.128.13/31: No interface with ifindex 3
ERROR routerIO dataplane_routing::interfaces::iftablerw: 265: Failed to add address 172.30.128.29/31: No interface with ifindex 4

Not established: whether these errors are why the addresses are missing, and which component should re-add the addresses on the new taps. There is no capture from before the restart in the failing run.

The dataplane CI gateway jobs for v0.30.0 passed without release tests, so the restart test did not run there.
