What the docs say

Log Quotas and Backtesting > Deployment > Logs give two limits: logs per backtest and logs per day, by organization tier. Log Messages adds the live-trading line count and the duplicate-suppression note.

No page states a per-line limit.

What actually happens

A single log line is stored truncated to 8,192 characters, counted after the YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS algorithm-time prefix the engine prepends, so 8,172 characters of the member's own text. There is no marker, no warning and no error: the line simply ends early, and the lines after it are unaffected.

The cut is on characters, not bytes. Measured in cloud backtests on LEAN v2.5.0.0.18230, read back through both /backtests/read/log and /backtests/export/logs (the two routes agree):

Members writing a JSON summary or a serialized structure to one log line lose the end of it silently, and currently have no documented number to size the line against.

Suggested change

On the Log Quotas page, next to the per-backtest and per-day table, state the per-line limit: a log line is truncated to 8,192 characters including the timestamp prefix, that the count is characters rather than UTF-8 bytes, and that the truncation is silent. The same sentence belongs on Backtesting > Deployment > Logs.

Two smaller points on the same pages while they are open:

  • Log Messages says "If you log the same content multiple times, only the first instance is added to the log file." That is Debug behavior, and only for a message identical to the one immediately before it (QCAlgorithm.Debug, Algorithm/QCAlgorithm.cs). Log stores every call: three identical Log lines all appear, while three consecutive identical Debug messages collapse to one and a A, B, A sequence keeps all three. The sentence should move to the Debug Messages section and say "identical to the previous one".
  • The daily quota is consumed by reading or downloading logs, which Export Logs states but the Log Quotas page does not.
