Zooming Images which don't match the hardcoded thumbnail aspect ratio cause problems

The autogenerated thumbnails of the zooming images are 313x207 (based on the original sketches)
Some example Zooming Images don't match that aspect ratio, which means that the thumbnail is visible when the image is zoomed:
We could probably handle this in part by hiding the thumbnail when the large image is produced, but also, is it problematic to have thumbnails which cut off part of the original image? I'm not sure if the current mechanism for automatically generating the thumbnails can be made to preserve the aspect ratio.
Is there a design rationale for enforcing a common size for all zooming image thumbnails? I'm guessing that people will want flexibility, but if any of this is going to be automated, we need to pin it down. (Alternatively, people can use the media browser to upload both forms of the image and put the URLs in directly...)
