There should be a method of finding image height, maintaining aspect ratios within the gmt image module. This is a feature that is possible for maps via mapproject -J -R -Wh, and I think it could be useful for images. Images can currently have their width and height set via image -D+w, which can keep aspect ratio. I would like to see an option that, given the width, can output the height to stdout.
Possible example usage: gmt image -D+w3i -Wh returns 3.5
