Reproduce by creating two contacts that share one number, then check whether the first contact is overwritten or merged on save. Done means both contacts remain listed and the multi-number case keeps all its numbers. The thread has no maintainer decision yet, so confirm the intended behaviour before changing it.

Steps to reproduce the bug
1 Take one of your contacts (say, "John Smith") and create a new contact (say, "John Smith New") with the same phone number
Expected behavior
Both "John Smith" and "John Smith New" are shown in the contacts list
Actual behavior
Only "John Smith New" is shown in the contacts list

Merge duplicates is off.
I have the contacts syncronized with a gmail account, and there both contacts are shown properly. Also the stock contacts app shows both contacts. ADDITIONAL INFO. The stock app shows both contacts, but when clicking on the "missing one" it says "contact not existing".
It also happens if you have a contact with multiple phone numbers and you create a new contact with one of those phone numbers. The original contact with multiple numbers disappears with all the associated numbers.
Once the contact is gone, there seems to be no way to recover it. You have to use a local backup or delete all contacts and syncronize them back.
