Problem to Solve

Reducing friction after updating the cli - when a user updates the cli they need to also bump the version of every first party project.

Its very easy for the user to forget to run dart pub get and end up with a state where everything "looks" correct but is in fact broken see #3505

Keeping first-party Serverpod package versions in sync across a project is manual and error-prone. This is especially important when serverpod generate depends on version compatibility between generated code and the CLI tool (see #3489). Developers may unintentionally run outdated versions, leading to subtle bugs or incompatibilities.

Proposal

Introduce a serverpod upgrade command in the CLI that:

  • Scans all pubspec.yaml files in the project.
  • Updates all first-party Serverpod package versions (e.g., serverpod, serverpod_flutter, serverpod_auth) to match the current CLI version.
  • Optionally supports a --dry-run flag to show planned changes without applying them.
  • Runs dart pub get after updating to ensure dependencies are fetched.
Use Case

A developer upgrades the Serverpod CLI to version 2.6.3.
By running serverpod upgrade, all first-party dependencies across backend and Flutter clients are updated to 2.6.3, ensuring compatibility and avoiding version drift.
