Description

There are a few reasons you might want to follow another profile.

  • You might want to see which events a speaker you like is speaking at
  • You might review an event and decide whether to attend based on which of your friends are speaking/attending
  • You might want to keep track of friends who are not speakers (currently challenging - can't search them)
  • You might want to see who's attending and reach out before the conference to make plans
  • You might want followed profiles to show up higher in your recommendations

Most of these are feasible today by manually visiting profiles and reviewing all attendees on an event, but we could make it easier by highlighting followed profiles.

Suggested Implementation

  • Create a join table called favorite_users - user:reference favorite_user:reference
  • Add a "Favorite/Unfavorite" button to the profile to create/destroy the favorite_user record
  • Create a new "Favorite Rubyists" page to list favorited users for easy review

I suggest that we don't show favorites or favorite count on the profile. People get weird about stuff like that.
We don't have notifications or emails, so I recommend against setting up a way to request favorite status.

Second phase of build out

  • Association - has_one :mutual_favorite_user
    • test how this works with includes
    • Red star for RubyFriends
  • Update the "Favorite Rubyists" page to group by Friends and favorites
  • Add "Favorite" button to the card - add to speakers on talk and mutual attendees in progress

Comments on Favorite Users

  • New tab on profile - Notes
  • Warning on unfavorite (Your notes will be lost)
  • Field for notes

Additional build out

  • Update "Known Participants" so your Ruby Friends show first, favorites next, and unaffilliated last.
  • Show upcoming events and recently published talks on the "Favorite Rubyist" page
  • "Your first Ruby Friend" Stamp - do they have to favorite you back?
  • Favorite someone using the passport!

Possible Naming

The concept and implementation of "Followers" is well understood, but the naming can be awkward. "Followed Profiles"? "Followeds"? Here are some alternative options.

Organized as Verb/Adverb/Noun so we can see usage in the app.

  • Follow/Followed/Followed Users - traditional, well understood
  • Bookmark/Bookmarked/Bookmarks - this has precedent with talks, and we can expand the concept to bookmarked events
  • Favourite/Favourited/Favorites - Another good choice, localization challenge, some people complain that you only have one favourite
  • Friend/Friendly/Friends - flexible, short, fun, doesn't support following favorite speakers

I picked favorite. I think it can communicate "This is my favorite speaker who I don't know" and "This is my favorite person, who I want to see at the event." When both people have favorited each other, we'll call them Ruby Friends!
