Part of the epic pyronear/roadmap#27 (New website).

Problem

On an unknown URL under a language prefix (for example /en/does-not-exist), the 404 page is shown in French (text, menu and links). Clicking "EN" then goes to the English home page, which makes it look as if the page is only translated at that point. Reproduced locally and on the deployed site.

Cause

Hugo generates one 404 page per language (/404.html, /en/404.html, ...), but GitHub Pages only serves the root /404.html (French) for every missing URL. The server cannot choose a language.

Options

  1. A small script on the 404 page that reads the language prefix of the URL and shows the matching text and button (and the menu links if we want to be thorough). Cleaner result, but the site would load JS on a page that has none today.
  2. A multilingual 404 with no script: the same page shows the four languages with one button per language. Simple and robust, less elegant.
  3. Leave it as is (rare case, the page already has a back-to-home button).

To decide

Which option, and whether the menu on the 404 page should follow the language too. Minor issue, not urgent.
