The payload names no file or test in this repository. The reporter's logs and detailed analysis are in nullmoth/1401#136, and the reporter altered boot-args and the DSDT, which the payload does not show being part of this repo. Before any code work, a maintainer has to decide whether this is a driver fault or firmware or OpenCore configuration. A first-timer cannot tell what would count as done from this text alone.

What happens

Hardware

  • ASUS TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI, BIOS 1079 (AGESA ComboAM5 PI 1.2.0.3f)
  • Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • Gigabyte RTX 5070 12 GB (10DE:2F04) — 1401 shows "listed by NVIDIA, model not tested yet"
  • G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB F5-6000J3636F16GX2-TZ5RS (2x16 GB DDR5-6000, bought used; later 1x16 GB at 4800, EXPO off)

Software

  • macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 (24H232), SMBIOS MacPro7,1
  • 1401 2.6.6 (Windows build + Mac app), NullMoth driver 2.6.6
  • OpenCore 1.0.8 DBG; Booter quirks include DevirtualiseMmio, SetupVirtualMap, RebuildAppleMemoryMap, SyncRuntimePermissions, DisableVariableWrite = true; OpenRuntime.efi loaded

Problem:
Every time I shut down macOS after enabling the NVIDIA driver, the BIOS can no longer get past POST and stays stuck without ever booting. The DRAM LED (orange) lights up, then the CPU LED (red), then everything turns off with nothing on screen. Clear CMOS does not work and does not fix the BIOS; only BIOS FlashBack does. This happened 2 times, with the same error 2 out of 2.
On the other hand, every shutdown without the NVIDIA driver does not harm the BIOS and the next boot works fine, and this happened 3 out of 3.

Did you change anything yourself?

I only changed two things, with the help of an AI assistant (Claude Opus 5.5 ExtraHigh, Anthropic):

  • I added -nvoff to boot-args to start macOS without the NVIDIA driver (only for the tests without the driver).
  • I replaced the DSDT with a new one regenerated by 1401 (scan + build), for 16 GB of RAM instead of 32 GB.
    The first no-POST happened before any of these changes, with the original 1401 config and 32 GB of RAM.
