Direzione di ricerca

Start by reading lib/Listeners/NodeWrittenResetDocumentListener.php around line 58 and trace how checksum checks interact with file locks and conflict handling. Compare the listed alternatives, including the linked Nextcloud server issue; the issue does not settle which approach to take. Done means agreeing on and implementing a conflict-handling approach that avoids unnecessary full-file reads while preserving conflict detection.

Descrizione

1. to develop design call discuss discussion ux

We currently store a checksum on every .md file save:
https://github.com/nextcloud/text/blob/19951abbbaca10923da261a74935ec08a85d2e7f/lib/Listeners/NodeWrittenResetDocumentListener.php#L58

This is for two reasons:

  1. Avoid extra conflict dialogs when the file is overwritten with the same content.
  2. Detect actual conflicts when the file is written twice in the same second.

Computing the checksum requires reading the entire file and can be costly for large files on external storage.
While this exists for historical reasons we now ship the files_lock app by default which prevents overwriting a text file that is being edited because it's locked.

Alternatives to the status quo

a) Rely on files_lock to prevent most conflicts. Trigger conflicts without checking checksum when the lock is broken or the file is written.
b) Use a server wide checksum implementation https://github.com/nextcloud/server/issues/56057
c) only check checksums when files_lock is not there
d) Rely on files_lock and update live editing sessions with the new content when a lock is broken.
