I would like to use my Nextcloud account through Apple's Files app on iOS and iPadOS while keeping the Nextcloud app protected by its app PIN.

Currently, when the app PIN is enabled and configured to be requested every time the Nextcloud app is launched, access through the Files app is completely blocked.
I understand that this restriction is intended to prevent unauthorized access to Nextcloud files through the iOS File Provider extension. However, I would prefer an authentication prompt rather than having access completely disabled.

Proposed solution:
Please implement an authentication mechanism for the Nextcloud File Provider extension that allows users to authenticate directly when accessing Nextcloud through Apple's Files app.

Ideally, this feature should support:

  • PIN authentication: Request the Nextcloud app PIN when accessing Nextcloud through the Files app.
  • Face ID / Touch ID: Allow biometric authentication as an alternative to entering the PIN.
  • Automatic locking: Allow users to configure an inactivity timeout after which authentication is required again.
  • Secure access: Files must remain inaccessible until the user has successfully authenticated.

Expected behavior:

  1. Open Apple's Files app.
  2. Navigate to the Nextcloud location.
  3. Nextcloud requests authentication via PIN or Face ID.
  4. After successful authentication, files and folders become accessible.
  5. After the configured timeout, access is locked again and authentication is required.

Why this matters:
I want to maintain the security provided by Nextcloud's app PIN without sacrificing the convenience of accessing my files through Apple's Files app.

Completely disabling the Files app integration is not an ideal solution. An authentication prompt would provide both security and usability.
