Direzione di ricerca

Read the epic nextbsd/nextbsd#546 and issue #359 first, then investigate gen-kext-dirs.py and config/NEXTBSD. The issue requires proving USB and device-tree autoload on physical arm64 hardware, especially a Pi, before moving the listed NIC drivers out of the kernel and shipping them as kexts. Done means those drivers load from kexts on a Pi and the config and kext directory changes are made.

Descrizione

Epic nextbsd/nextbsd#546 (E21 D11/D12).

#359 moves the PCI NICs out of the kernel. The arm64 board NICs stay compiled in, because on a board they are often the only network and USB or device-tree autoload has only been tested in QEMU:

  • genet (Pi 4);
  • cgem, awg, mvneta (device tree);
  • muge, smsc, ure, axe/axge (USB, the Pi 3 LAN and dongles).

Once a Pi boots with these loaded from kexts, the moves are:

  1. nodevice them in config/NEXTBSD;
  2. let gen-kext-dirs.py (NET_STAYS) ship them on arm64 too.

The USBEthernet (uether) kext already exists for amd64 and would join them on arm64.
