Direzione di ricerca

Start by tracing the get_census entry point and locating each place where a missing cache path emits a message. Check how cache paths are currently configured, then verify that one call produces at most one prominent warning and that get_census accepts a cache_path parameter.

Descrizione

When no cache path is set the package emits a message to inform the user. This happens in several places and can lead to message spam that we should eliminate. It should also get elevated to a warning, there are quite a few cases where users ignore the message and repeatedly hit the API to download the same data.

Some suggestions how to handle this better:

  • Reduce message clutter, a get_census call should emit at most one message/warning
  • Make it more visible, maybe using colour to alert users that this is important
  • Expose a cache_path parameter in the get_census call, that makes things more transparent and increases awareness of caching, and it also allows users to set project-specific cache paths if they want to keep a separate cache for a specific project for backup and reproducibility purposes.
