Direzione di ricerca

The code lives in the gitlinked nanvix/openvmm checkout, not the top-level tree: start with openvmm/openvmm_core/src/worker/dispatch/time_abi.rs and the constant MAX_REPORTED_CPUID_DIFFERENCES, then read check_recorded_cpuid and check_presented, which apply the cap. Read section 2.2.1.3 of the architecture guide in doc/design/ before choosing between removing the cap and documenting the bound. Done means every CPUID difference is reported or the bound is stated in the guide, and the other verification steps are checked the same way.

Descrizione

Summary

CPU-profile verification reports every violation together, naming the leaf, subleaf, register, and bit (section 2.2.1.3 of the architecture guide in doc/design/). OpenVMM's E_CPU_SURFACE errors name at most 16 differences and drop the rest. They do report the total count.

Found while auditing the implementation against the architecture guide.

Where it happens

OpenVMM links are pinned to the gitlink nanvix/openvmm@c6d97c5, in openvmm/openvmm_core/src/worker/dispatch/time_abi.rs:

Intended behavior

Every difference is named. The effective CPUID has a bounded number of entries, so the full list stays bounded too. Alternatively, the architecture guide states the bound.

Tasks

  • Remove the cap in nanvix/openvmm and promote the pin, or record the bound in section 2.2.1.3 of the architecture guide.
  • Check that the other verification steps of section 2.2.1.3, such as backend support of the profile and unlisted entries, also report every violation.
