What happens

With Outset 4.3.0.22031 and no background_script_timeout set, a background (_-prefixed) login-once script is killed after 30 seconds:

What the docs say

  • Wiki, Background Scripts → Timeout: "By default, Outset waits indefinitely for background scripts to finish."
  • CHANGELOG (4.3): "A new optional preference key background_script_timeout (integer, seconds, no default) … When not set, Outset waits indefinitely for background scripts to exit."
  • The comment above backgroundScriptTimeout in Outset/UserDefaults/Preferences.swift: "When nil, background scripts run until they exit naturally with no enforced limit."

What the code does

Outset/Globals.swift: let defaultBackgroundScriptTimeout: Int = 30, used as the fallback in Preferences.swift (as? Int ?? defaultBackgroundScriptTimeout) and as the struct default.

Suggested fix

Either make the default "no limit" to match the docs (e.g. treat 0/unset as unlimited), or update the wiki, CHANGELOG and code comment to say the default is 30 seconds. Waiting for something to finish installing is a natural use of background scripts, and a silent 30 s cap is easy to miss.

Workaround for anyone hitting this: set background_script_timeout (seconds) in the io.macadmins.Outset managed preferences.
