Descrizione

documentation help wanted

What happens

The compose example in the self hosting install guide gives the postgres service no shm_size. Docker then gives the container its default /dev/shm of 64MB. PostgreSQL keeps its dynamic shared memory there. Parallel queries, such as a parallel hash join or a parallel bitmap scan, share their working memory through it, and the server statistics can grow into it too. Once it is full, a query fails with ERROR: could not resize shared memory segment ... No space left on device (SQLSTATE 53100). The postgres image's own documentation warns about this and suggests 256MB. The development compose.yaml already sets it.

What should happen

The postgres service in the install guide's compose example sets shm_size: ${POSTGRES_SHM_SIZE:-256mb}, the same line as the development compose.yaml. One sentence under the example says why: with only 64MB of /dev/shm, larger queries fail. The .env example in step 2 gains a commented # POSTGRES_SHM_SIZE=256mb line for anyone who needs more. Existing installs add the line and run docker compose up -d postgres, which recreates the container and keeps the data volume. No other docs page repeats the postgres service, so nothing else changes.
