Problem statement

04-github-actions-intro.md ("GitHub Actions in 5 Minutes") is the lowest-scoring page in the entire 30-step curriculum (overall_score 5.39/10) and has the third-highest conditional dropout (16.4%, 7,218 of 44,154 at-risk runs), entirely attributed to the concept-overload failure category (100% of failures at this step). The page introduces 28 new concepts in only 756 words — the highest concept density of any step in the corpus — while asking learners to complete a labeling activity and explore a real workflow file, all before the more central agentic-workflow content even begins.

Proposed change

Add a compact visual "workflow anatomy" summary (a single annotated diagram, reusing the anatomy image already referenced later in the page) immediately after the "Quick Refresher" section and before the annotated YAML example, so learners get a visual map of the five key terms (trigger, job, runner, step, action) before encountering them in code. This is a scaffolding addition, not a content reduction — the existing annotated example, labeling activity, "explore a real workflow" exercise, and reveal-the-labels detail block all remain unchanged.

Failure mode classification

Learning barrier (conceptual density / insufficient scaffolding before the labeling activity), not an access or tooling barrier — no credentials or terminal work are required for this step.

Quantitative guardrail

Current scores for 04-github-actions-intro.md:

  • overall_score: 5.39/10 (lowest in the 30-step corpus)
  • Weakest rubric dimensions: checkpoint_quality (0.0/10) and active_learning (3.9/10)
  • Learning KPI dimensions: active_learning 3.9/10 · checkpoint_quality 0.0/10 · scaffolding 5.0/10
  • Learning KPI index: (2.0×3.9 + 2.0×0.0 + 1.5×5.0) / 5.5 = 2.79/10

The proposed change adds a scaffolding element (a visual concept map) ahead of the existing labeling activity, directly targeting the scaffolding dimension without touching cognitive load reduction or removing any of the five existing hands-on elements (annotated example, runner detail, comparison table, labeling activity, real-workflow exploration). overall_score and the learning KPI index should improve or hold steady; neither should decrease.

Acceptance criteria

  • The shared curriculum quantitative assessment overall_score for 04-github-actions-intro.md stays flat or improves after the change (baseline 5.39/10, currently the corpus low)
  • The step's learning KPI index (2.0 × active_learning + 2.0 × checkpoint_quality + 1.5 × scaffolding) / 5.5 stays flat or improves (currently 2.79/10), with scaffolding as the primary target dimension
  • The existing labeling activity, "explore a real workflow" exercise, and checkpoint checklist are preserved unchanged — no hands-on practice is removed to reduce apparent complexity
  • Re-running the workshop student simulator shows a reduced concept-overload failure count for the 04-actions-intro step relative to this baseline (7,218 of 7,218 failures — 100% of failures at this step)
