Summary

A branch that only edits the operator manual (docs/manual/) runs the full Windows job, about 18 minutes, although no Windows test reads the manual. Only the Linux job (tests/manual/manual.bats) and the Manuals job check it. Skipping the Windows job for manual-only branches saves that time on every documentation pass.

  • .github/workflows/ci.yml, the changes job: one output, code, gates all three test jobs. docs/manual/* sets code=true.
  • tests/manual/manual.bats reads docs/manual/labyrinth.md. tests/runner/Help.Tests.ps1 only checks that the help names the manual's path, not its content.

Current Behavior

A change to docs/manual/ alone runs the Linux, Manuals and Windows jobs. The Windows job adds about 18 minutes and tests nothing that changed.

Plan

  1. Give the changes job a second output, windows, that is true when the branch changes anything other than the paths the job skips today and docs/manual/.
  2. Gate the windows job on windows, and keep linux and manual on code.
  3. Keep every push to main running all jobs.

Acceptance tests

  • A branch changing only docs/manual/labyrinth.md runs the Linux and Manuals jobs and skips Windows; the required checks still pass.
  • A branch changing a .ps1 file, or any file outside the skipped paths, runs all three.
  • A push to main runs all three.

Done when

  • The three cases above are shown on test branches, and the PR lists their run links.

Out of scope

  • Splitting the Linux job's own steps.
  • The Docs workflow (docs.yml).
