Description

Kubernetes stuck on "Starting" on a corporate laptop? A proxy is probably catching the local address kubernetes.docker.internal. Add it to NO_PROXY.

Symptom
• Docker Desktop shows Starting – waiting for node to be ready and never finishes.
• kubectl get nodes fails with Get "https://kubernetes.docker.internal:6443/...": Bad Gateway or "https://kubernetes.docker.internal:6443/...":Forbidden"
• The cluster itself is running (docker ps shows the control-plane containers up).

Cause
The laptop has HTTP_PROXY / HTTPS_PROXY set, and NO_PROXY doesn't list kubernetes.docker.internal. Docker's kubeconfig uses that name, so the request goes to the proxy, which answers 502 Bad Gateway. The IP 127.0.0.1 is never proxied, which is why it works directly.

Verify
In PowerShell (use curl.exe, not curl):

Get-ChildItem Env: | Where-Object Name -match 'proxy'
curl.exe -vk https://kubernetes.docker.internal:6443/version
curl.exe -vk --noproxy "*" https://kubernetes.docker.internal:6443/version

The plain curl.exe returns 502; with --noproxy "*" it returns 200 and the version JSON.

Fix
Set NO_PROXY at user level. This replaces the old value, so keep the existing entries. For example:

[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable('NO_PROXY','localhost,127.0.0.1,.example.com,kubernetes.docker.internal,.docker.internal','User')

Suggestion

There are two different business customer experiencing that Kubernetes stuck on "Starting" behind a corporate proxy. A proxy is probably catching the local address kubernetes.docker.internal. Therefore, suggesting to document this publicly.
