Direzione di ricerca

Start with the quantum-tunneling case in src/core/test/closedForm.test.ts, which measures the transmission error. The issue names a 240-point grid over ±10 and a barrier width that snaps to two-cell steps, so find where the solver builds the grid and maps the width slider to cells. Choosing between a finer grid and slider snapping needs physics judgement, so confirm the choice with the maintainer first. Done means the width error is explained or removed and the test still passes within its tolerance.

Descrizione

enhancement physics-review

The tunnelling instrument solves the Schrödinger equation on 240 points across 20 length units, so the grid cell is 0.084. The grid has no point at x = 0, so a centred barrier always covers an even number of cells and its width moves in steps of 0.167 (two cells; corrected 2026-11-01, see the review comment). 8 of the 24 slider positions draw the same barrier as their neighbour (0.8 and 0.9 are identical, for example). Its width is rounded: a width set to 1.00 is really 1.004, but one set to 0.8 is 0.837. For a barrier that is a few decay lengths thick, T changes with width like e^(−2κd), so that rounding alone moves T by about 25 % in the second case.

Even allowing for the rounding, the instrument is about 4 % away from the exact packet-averaged transmission (the check holds it to 8 %). Most of the remaining error, and more at other settings, comes from when T is read: the box is ±10, so slow packets have not all arrived and fast ones come back off the wall (see the review comment).

Options

  • Finer grid (cost: CPU per step, and the time step may need to shrink).
  • Snap the barrier-width slider to multiples of the cell width, and say so.
  • Both.
