Start with the Dockerfile and docker-bake.hcl in renovatebot/base-image, which pin the 24.04 base and have no distro axis, then compare the resolute stages in test/Dockerfile.base and test/Dockerfile.distro in containerbase/base. Done means a resolute variant builds and its tags are published, which depends on maintainers agreeing the tag scheme and the default before any code change.

Describe the proposed change(s)

containerbase/base gained Ubuntu 26.04 (resolute) support in containerbase/base#6601 (closes containerbase/base#6610), but renovatebot/base-image is still 24.04 only, so there is no way to consume it.

  • containerbase/base Dockerfile on main is FROM ghcr.io/containerbase/ubuntu:24.04@sha256:…; the resolute stage from #6601 exists only in test/Dockerfile.base and test/Dockerfile.distro and is exercised by the CI distro matrix.
  • renovatebot/base-image is FROM ghcr.io/containerbase/base:<version>@sha256:… with no distro axis in docker-bake.hcl.
  • Published tags on ghcr.io contain no distro variant: renovatebot/base-image has only version tags plus latest, full, next, next-full, and containerbase/base has only version tags plus latest. ghcr.io/containerbase/ubuntu:26.04 exists.

We build a derived image on top of renovatebot/base-image and want to move it to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, which currently means rebuilding the whole containerbase and tool layer ourselves.

Could you publish a resolute variant, for example a distro-suffixed tag such as <version>-resolute / `-resolute-full?

If that is not planned, is there a recommended way to build base-image on ubuntu:26.04, and is the intended path for the default to move from noble to resolute at some point?

Alternatives you've considered

Building our own image from ghcr.io/containerbase/ubuntu:26.04 and re-adding the containerbase install and prepare-tool steps. It works in principle but duplicates upstream and drifts from it.
