Direzione di ricerca

Start with install-tool.service.ts and the npm resolver metadata; then read python/schema.ts to see how PyPI runtime requirements are parsed. Compare how version resolution and installation handle parent versions for npm, PyPI, and RubyGems. Done means compatible releases are selected and explicitly requested incompatible versions produce the agreed behavior; the issue leaves exact-version handling and missing or unparseable ranges open.

Descrizione

status:ready type:feature

Tools with a parent (npm tools and vp on node, pip tools on python, gems on ruby, gradle/maven/sbt on java, composer on php, elixir on erlang, …) only check that some parent version is installed (install-tool.service.ts, MissingParent). Neither version resolution nor installation looks at which parent versions the tool actually supports. So install-tool can install a version that doesn't run on the current parent, or resolve latest to a release requiring a newer runtime, and the failure only shows up later. This came up in #7338 for Vite+, which needs a supported Node range for vp sync-versions.

Proposal:

  • Resolve against the parent: when resolving latest or a partial version, skip releases whose declared runtime range excludes the current parent version, where the registry provides it:
    • npm: engines.node, already present in the abbreviated metadata the npm resolver fetches
    • PyPI: requires_python, already parsed in python/schema.ts but unused
    • RubyGems: required_ruby_version
  • Validate on install: reject an explicitly requested version whose range excludes the installed parent, with a clear error, instead of installing it and failing at runtime.
  • Tools without registry metadata (e.g. gradle/maven on java, buildx on docker): optionally a static minimum parent version per tool service.

Open questions: whether an incompatible exact version should fail or only warn (Renovate pins exact versions), and how to treat a missing or unparseable range (probably: allow).
