Some users or tool managers or install scripts need to manage Claude Code's executable and environment themselves.

  • Installing Claude Code in an isolated, application-managed directory.
  • Support alternative tree folders system/home layouts.
  • Managing PATH and launchers independently.
  • Avoiding changes to the user's existing Claude Code installation or home-directory layout.
  • Preparing binaries for CI environments, containers, or offline deployment.

Please add an environment variable to the native installation script:

To bypass the setup/install last step of this script, which manage link creation and PATH for the system. For example, CLAUDE_INSTALL_DOWNLOAD_ONLY=1 would download and verify the Claude Code executable without running the last installation step.

Current behavior

The bootstrap script currently:

  1. Resolves the latest bootstrap version.

  2. Detects the platform and architecture.

  3. Downloads and verifies the executable.

  4. Makes the executable runnable.

  5. Runs:

    "$binary_path" install ${TARGET:+"$TARGET"}

  6. Removes the downloaded executable:

    rm -f "$binary_path"

Proposed behavior

The bootstrap script would:

  1. Resolves the latest bootstrap version.

  2. Detects the platform and architecture.

  3. Downloads and verifies the executable.

  4. Makes the executable runnable.

  5. Only if CLAUDE_INSTALL_DOWNLOAD_ONLY is not set, runs:

    "$binary_path" install ${TARGET:+"$TARGET"}

  6. Only if CLAUDE_INSTALL_DOWNLOAD_ONLY is not set, removes the downloaded executable.
