Description

After updating the desktop app to 2.2.0, the View → Toggle File Tree menu item is gone and Ctrl+\ (fileTree.toggle) does nothing. The changes panel (changed-files tree + git diffs) can no longer be shown or hidden from the app menu.

PR #57539 ("refactor(app): retire the legacy side-panel file tree", merged 2026-10-20, first released in 2.2.0) removed the legacy tree, the fileTree.toggle command, its View-menu entry, and the general.showFileTree plumbing. The replacement exists — the Review side-panel tab holds the changed-files tree and diffs, and the Open file tab holds the all-files tree — but it is only reachable from the panel's + menu or the command palette (review.toggle, file.open). There is no View-menu entry and no replacement keybind.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Install desktop 2.2.0.
  2. Open a project with uncommitted changes.
  3. Open the hamburger menu → View.
Expected

A menu entry to show/hide the changes panel (as in 2.1.4: View → Toggle File Tree), and a working Ctrl+\.

Actual

The View menu only has Toggle Sidebar and Toggle Terminal. Ctrl+\ does nothing. Users who relied on the menu cannot find the Review/file tree panel.

Suggested fix
  • Add a View menu item (e.g. "Toggle File Tree" / "Toggle Review") mapped to review.toggle, or a command that opens the Review tab specifically.
  • Keep Ctrl+\ or document the replacement in the release notes / migration guide.
  • Consider using the retired general.showFileTree value as a one-time hint to open the Review tab.
