The Homebrew tap lagged two releases behind, and nothing reported it. Until 2026-09-24, brew install InauguralSystems/eigenscript/eigenscript (the install route README.md advertises) installed v0.41.0, while the latest release was v0.43.0. The bump PR (homebrew-eigenscript#12) sat red for a day for an unrelated reason. The tap's CI referenced Homebrew/actions/setup-homebrew@master, which no longer resolves, so every tap PR failed before it tested anything (fixed by homebrew-eigenscript#11, which pins a SHA).

Why it went unnoticed: .github/workflows/release.yml builds and publishes a release but never touches the tap. Nothing compares the tap's formula version with the latest tag, so the drift is silent. This is the same class as the doc-drift "Latest release" line, except that one has a gate.

Proposed fix (structural, not a new gate here): the tap updates itself. A scheduled workflow in homebrew-eigenscript reads the latest EigenScript release through the public API, which needs no token. When the formula is behind, it opens a PR with the new url and a sha256 computed from the tarball. The tap's own test-bot then runs on that PR. This keeps the credential question out of EigenScript. The alternative, release.yml pushing a PR into the tap, would need a cross-repo token.

Done when

  • homebrew-eigenscript has a scheduled (and workflow_dispatch) workflow that opens a formula-bump PR whenever the latest EigenScript release tag is newer than the formula's version.
  • Its sha256 is computed from the downloaded tarball, never typed by hand.
  • Proven once: pointed at a fake "newer" version (or dispatched after the next release), it opens a correct PR, and that PR's test-bot runs green.
  • The release steps in the release skill / docs/ say the tap bump is automatic and where to look if its PR goes red.
