Start by checking the files in config/ that use Openbox, X11 tools, tint2, and picom, then verify which versions of labwc, Rofi, and Waybar Debian 13 ships. Check Debian 13's NVIDIA driver support and whether Calamares, LightDM, and the live session support a Wayland login. Done means there is a staged migration plan that preserves X11 as the default through 2.0.x and provides a working Wayland preview before a later default change.

debian-13 desktop enhancement roadmap

Simple OS runs Openbox on X11. Wayland is where the Linux desktop is going, but almost every Simple OS tool is built for X11 today (a quick count in config/: Openbox in 25 files, xfce4-power-manager 15, tint2 14, picom 9, plus ~30 files using xrandr/xset/xprop/xinput/xclip/xdotool/wmctrl/setxkbmap/maim/xss-lock, and the Rofi windows).

Plan – small, testable steps, nobody loses their desktop in an update

  1. 2.0.x: Debian 13 on X11 as planned – no desktop change at the same time as the base change.
  2. 2.1 / 2.2: an extra login session "Simple OS (Wayland, preview)" with labwc (Openbox-like, reads Openbox-style config and themes). X11 stays the default. Tools are moved over one by one so they work on both:
    • taskbar: tint2 → waybar or sfwbar
    • idle / screen off / lock: xfce4-power-manager, xset, xss-lock → swayidle + swaylock (or similar)
    • displays: xrandr → wlr-randr / kanshi
    • clipboard: xclip/xsel → wl-clipboard (+ history)
    • screenshots: maim → grim + slurp
    • night light: gammastep (supports wlroots)
    • menus/search: Rofi with Wayland support, or fuzzel
    • picom: not needed (the compositor does it)
  3. Later in 2.x (e.g. 2.2 or 2.3): Wayland becomes the default session once everything works; X11 stays available as a fallback for a while. Never in a 2.0.x release.

To check first

  • Which versions of labwc, rofi (Wayland support), waybar etc. Debian 13 ships.
  • NVIDIA: Wayland needs a recent proprietary driver – what Debian 13 offers.
  • Calamares, LightDM and the live session with a Wayland session.
