Start by reading the provider implementations of EnsureCollectionExistsAsync and how they map vector model properties to collection schemas. Compare what schema changes each provider can support, especially adding a data property to an existing collection. The issue is addressed when the supported behavior and handling of existing records are defined and implemented, with tests covering the relevant provider cases.

Descrizione

Hi... Thank you for MEVD... Been a long time user

I use it primarily with MSSQL and one thing that have always been an annoyance is that you are "stuck" with the current schema once you call collection.EnsureCollectionExistsAsync();

So example if i have

public class VectorModel
{
    [VectorStoreKey]
    public required string Id { get; set; }

    [VectorStoreData]
    public required string Question { get; set; }

    [VectorStoreData]
    public required string Answer { get; set; }

    [VectorStoreVector(1536)]
    public string? Vector => $"""
                              <knowledgeBaseEntry>
                                 <question>{Question}</question>
                                 <answer>{Answer}</answer>
                              </knowledgeBaseEntry>
                              """;
}

I the EnsureCollectionExistsAsync create this table (given you name it "myCollection"):

But then lets say I later find out I want to have a TimeStamp Property aka

    [VectorStoreData]
    public required DateTime TimeStamp { get; set; }

then I'm currently forced to delete the table and recreate it (or manually manipulate the Table's design with the new column) before MEVD will work again.

I completely understand that this is not a trivial thing to do (example, what to put as value for existing records for new properties) across all the providers and some of them it might even be impossible, but want to throw it out there...
