Direzione di ricerca

This is a policy RFC, not a code change: the decision is which platforms OpenImageIO officially supports, and the current wording lives in INSTALL.md. Read the issue's facts and ecosystem notes, then join the discussion with a view on the proposed tiers or on the build-system alternative. Done means maintainers agree on a position and INSTALL.md is updated to match.

Descrizione

Let's just state some facts first about the current status quo:

  • INSTALL.md says "Supported platforms at present include Linux (32 and 64 bit), Mac OS X, and Windows."
  • We do not CI test on any 32 bit platforms, and as far as I know, none of our regular developers uses, tests on, or develops on 32 bit systems.
  • I don't recall our actively doing any work to keep things working on 32 bit systems for a long, long time, though we accept patches from external sources with that purpose as long as they are easy to review, etc.
  • Other than that, it appears to be an ambiguous level of support.

Ecosystem:

  • Blender no longer builds 32 bit binaries or truly supports those systems, but seems to also take the position of "we aren't actively breaking it."
  • OSL explicitly claims to be 64 bit platform only (though does not actively detect and prevent it, but we don't actually believe it would functionally work).

I think that we don't need to change the de facto practice on the ground of "we won't purposely disallow it, but it's on you and we don't test it."

But perhaps it's better to be more explicit in our documentation about what we support? I would like to recommend -- and make open for comment or counter-arguments -- the following more explicit positions:

  • Official supported and tested platforms are 64 bit Linux (x86_64 and ARM), Windows (x86_64), and Mac (ARM, and currently also x86_64).
  • We do not actively support or test other CPU architectures or operating systems.
  • But if you can get it to build on other platforms, great! We will not actively prevent it.
  • We will accept PRs that fix things on other platforms, as long as those PRs are easy to review and don't add undue clutter or in any other way compromise our maintenance of supported platform.
  • Unsupported platforms are excluded from our security policies -- use at your own risk.

But if people want to argue for alternative policies -- for example, either trying harder to support it officially, or actively disallowing it via the build system -- I would like to hear those opinions.
