Research direction

Start by reviewing the official OTEL GenAI spans specification linked in the issue and the repository's existing semantic conventions. Clarify whether image tokens, cache writes, and popular tool calls should become attributes, then define the accepted convention and examples as the completion criteria.

Description

Feature

Some types of token that are still not defined in official OTEL spec, but would be nice to have to get more precise cost calculation:

  • image tokens - be aware of how many "image tokens" have been spent
  • cache writes - i assume these happen when there is explicit cache write happening while calling special SDK methods

Also, would it make sense to have some tool calls that are super popular as a separate attribute (e.g. web_search)?
