The change belongs in the Power Query connector definition, adding SqlCapabilities with Sql92Translation set to "PassThrough" and a NativeQueryProperties record in the Publish record, following the linked Microsoft native-query SDK guide. Add a test that checks the generated SQL folds for later steps, then verify in Power BI Desktop in both Import and DirectQuery. Done means the Native query field appears, folding holds with EnableFolding = true, and the approval prompt works in both modes.

Description

Description

The connector has no way to enter a SQL statement in Get Data. Users who need a hand-written query must either create a view in Trino or fall back to Microsoft's generic ODBC connector, whose SQL statement field works with this driver but is Import-Mode-only and does not fold later steps.

Power Query's documented mechanism is Sql92Translation = "PassThrough" in SqlCapabilities plus a NativeQueryProperties record in the Publish record, which adds a Native query field to the dialog and, with EnableFolding = true, keeps subsequent steps folding: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/native-query-sdk

Tasks
  • the .pq change
  • a folding-contract test for the generated SQL
  • a Power BI Desktop check in both Import and DirectQuery (DirectQuery behaviour with native queries is untested): Power BI asks the user to approve each native query; that is by design and stays.
