Start by tracing the OpenAI/Codex authentication flow to the BYOKKit npm installation step, focusing on how commands, paths, shells, and temporary directories are handled on Windows. Add regression coverage for Windows and paths containing spaces, then verify that authentication completes and existing macOS/Linux behavior remains unchanged.

Description

Summary

OpenAI/Codex authentication fails on Windows 10 while Command Code attempts to install the required BYOKKit npm package.

I traced the issue back to the installation command using Unix-specific shell syntax even when running on Windows. This causes the BYOKKit installation step to fail, preventing the OpenAI/Codex login flow from continuing.

Expected Behavior

Command Code should use a Windows-compatible installation command when running on Windows, successfully install the required BYOKKit dependency, and continue with the OpenAI/Codex authentication flow normally.

Actual Behavior

The OpenAI/Codex login flow fails while attempting to install BYOKKit.

The installation appears to use Unix-specific shell syntax on Windows, causing the npm package installation to fail and preventing authentication from continuing.

Steps to reproduce the issue
  1. Install Command Code normally on Windows 10.
  2. Start Command Code.
  3. Attempt to authenticate with OpenAI/Codex.
  4. Command Code attempts to install the required BYOKKit npm package.
  5. The installation fails due to Unix-specific shell syntax being used on Windows.
  6. The OpenAI/Codex login flow does not complete.

Investigate the OpenAI/Codex authentication flow and locate the code responsible for installing the BYOKKit npm dependency.

The installation currently appears to assume a Unix-like shell and uses Unix-specific shell syntax even when Command Code is running on Windows. This causes the dependency installation to fail on Windows 10 and prevents the OpenAI/Codex login flow from completing.

Update the installation logic to be cross-platform rather than relying on Unix shell behavior. Prefer invoking npm/package-manager commands directly with explicit arguments instead of constructing shell command strings where possible. Ensure paths, quoting, command resolution, environment handling, and temporary directories work correctly on Windows as well as macOS/Linux.

Do not special-case only the exact observed failure if the underlying installation helper is shared. Check whether the same Unix-specific assumptions affect other dynamically installed dependencies or authentication providers and fix the common abstraction where appropriate.

Add regression coverage for Windows and preserve existing behavior on macOS/Linux.

Verify that:

  • BYOKKit can be installed successfully on Windows 10/11.
  • OpenAI/Codex authentication proceeds after installation.
  • Paths containing spaces are handled correctly.
  • The implementation does not depend on Unix-only shell operators or utilities.
  • Existing macOS/Linux installation behavior remains unchanged.
  • Relevant tests, type checks, linting, and builds pass.
Additional context

I no longer have the exact error output, but I traced the failure to the BYOKKit installation step and specifically to Unix shell syntax being used when constructing or executing the npm installation command on Windows.

Environment:

  • Windows 10
  • OpenAI/Codex authentication
  • BYOKKit installation triggered automatically by the login flow

The package itself does not appear to be the underlying issue. The failure seems to be caused by the platform-specific shell command used to install it.
