Description

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

At the moment it is possible to build an entirely wooden car-boat, install wheels, motors and liquid tanks on it, then it will be impossible to actually drive this thing, as that requires "controls" and controls are (seemingly arbitrarily) gated behind welding. Even when character is capable of building an electric motor and video game system from scratch, the character still cannot comprehend a method to drive a wooden car-boat he/she has built.

Solution you would like.

Add "wooden controls" craftable from wooden materials. A couple of planks plus a log would likely be sufficient. Installation should not require welding or brazing rods.

Describe alternatives you have considered.

While certainly less optimal, an alternative would be to add another method to attach "controls" to a vehicle.

That could be:

  • Rivets + Hammer + Drill
  • Nuts + Bolts + Bolt Turning + Drill.
  • Scrap Metal OR Rebar + Nearby Forge.
  • Wire + Nearby Forge OR High Strength.

Additional context

As demonstrated here: https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/issues/34378#issuecomment-1365977109

It is possible to build most of the car parts using wood.

Mostly wooden car: (two welded parts on steering wheels, could be forged) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mVt1FGYLr4 Wooden car model with wooden steering system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFu-Wer1dQg Completely wooden bicycle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yJdz-kjfLk

Another part of the problem is that the game assumes that the only way to attach metal parts together is welding, while in reality we have rivets, nuts and bolts, and given that there's portable forge, it is possible to use heated metal scraps to make braces and the like. It should also be possible to tie things together using thick wire. Modern aviation apparently uses rivets and not welding. ( https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/16995/why-are-planes-using-rivets-not-welded-construction ) Metal parts that can be installed without welding already exists in the game (Metal Tank, Storage Battery, etc).
