Metafont and descendents fromderivatives
Ensure it is an Open Source downloadable font.
Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN) has a convenient mass download site @JAIST

Most of them are fee The LATEX Project Public License (LPPL) which I think is pretty permissive.
Most of them are in TTF format, a lot are Type 1 but some the reset I assume will be trickier to convert.
Not all the fonts are free, most of the Monospaced fonts in Google's package are Metafont descendents. Maybe i've been living under a rock. I just stumbled across this, and it feels like a gold mine. This is fascinating.
Computer Mondern is gorgeos is gorgeous, Latin Modern, EC fonts just general good quality fonts in there. I know there large LaTeX comunit out there, that's going to say "duh", but this stuff need to be out there.
