Additional context

Vigil Serif is a reproportioned derivative of Vollkorn by Friedrich Althausen, also under the OFL 1.1: cap and x-height raised to Vigil's metrics, the lowercase condensed at constant stem weight, descenders shortened, ascenders flattened to cap height, lining figures by default with old-style on onum, and Light and ExtraLight masters added so the axis runs 200–900 in both families. Vollkorn's copyright is retained in nameID 0 and in OFL.txt as the licence requires; Vollkorn declares no Reserved Font Name.

What ships (version 1.300)

  • Variable — VigilSerif[wght].ttf and VigilSerif-Italic[wght].ttf, one axis, wght 200–900, eight named instances each
  • Static — 16 instances, ExtraLight 200 → Black 900, roman + italic, TTF (hinted with ttfautohint) and WOFF2

Coverage

Latin, Greek and Cyrillic: 1,259 encoded characters, 2,322 glyphs, with small capitals, four figure sets, fractions and Vollkorn's f-ligatures. Version 1.300 completes the Latin letters seven West African orthographies need — the open o and e (ɔ Ɔ ɛ Ɛ) and the hooked letters ɓ ɗ ƙ ƴ Ɓ Ɗ Ƙ Ƴ — so Yoruba, Bambara, Dyula, Fanti, Akuapem Twi, Fulah and Hausa set correctly. fontbakery's Google Fonts profile reports 0 FAIL on the variable fonts.

Companion request: #163 (Vigil, the sans). The two are designed to be set together — the site's vigil.css declares both — so packaging them side by side would be ideal, though either stands alone.
