usermod(8) documents -m, --move-home (with -d), and #242 listed it as missing; it still is. usermod -d NEW -m USER is what Ansible's user module runs for move_home: yes:
# useradd -m alice
# usermod -d /home/new -m alice
GNU: exit 0, /home/alice moved to /home/new
shadow-rs: error: unexpected argument '-m' found (exit 2), nothing changed
GNU behaviour, checked as a black box (GNU shadow 4.17.4, Ubuntu 26.04):
- same filesystem: rename; across filesystems: copy keeping owners, modes, times, hard links, symlinks and fifos, then the old tree is removed
/etc/passwdis updated first and stays updated if the move fails- new path exists:
directory /home/new exists, exit 12; rename fails:cannot rename directory A to B, exit 12 - old home missing: a warning, exit 0
-mwithout-d: usage error, exit 2- with
-u/-g, the moved home is re-owned
