Línea de trabajo

The report concerns the VS Code Quarto extension sending R chunk code to an attached R terminal when a .qmd file is opened. Start by reproducing it with an empty profile and a .qmd containing one library() line, then look for the code path that sends chunk text to the terminal on file open rather than on explicit run. Done means no code reaches the terminal without a user action, and the R terminal history and sessionInfo() stay clean.

Bug description

Hello,

I’ve been experiencing some high CPU and RAM usage when opening .qmd files lately. Some R processes are working hard in the background, and they keep running even if I quit VS Code. I need to manually kill them for my system to return to normal.

While investigating the issue, I realised that some code seems to be sent to my R terminal even though I never run any. For example, if I open a file with just an R chunk contaninig library(tidyverse) and then I open an R terminal, it will display after a few seconds the tidyverse loading message ("Attaching core tidyverse packages…"). If I then run sessionInfo() in that same terminal, I see that the tidyverse package is loaded.

I also find variables listed when I run ls() some time after opening a Quarto file with more code.

The code that appears to be sent to the terminal is not stored in its history (when I use the arrow up key, I don’t see anything).

I managed to reproduce the bug in an empty VS Code profile containing just R and Quarto extensions.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Open VS Code
  2. Open an R Terminal and attach it to VS Code (either radian or normal R)
  3. Open a .qmd file containing at least one line of R code
Actual behavior

Runs some code (at least the first line, but I think it’s more with larger files).

Expected behavior

It should not do anything.
