What happened

I updated from macOS 27.0.1 (26A434) to 27.2 (26B123) in System Settings > Software Update, and the download stopped partway. The update itself had finished downloading. What Software Update was waiting on were two Apple Intelligence model sets the profile blocks, and it kept retrying them.

I don't run RemoveMacAI itself: my profile is one I built from RemoveMacAI's, with the same download block (DownloadServerBaseURLOverride-<asset type> in com.apple.MobileAsset, pointing at https://127.0.0.1:9/). RemoveMacAI blocks the two sets that stalled, UAF.FM.GenerativeModels and UAF.FM.Visual, too, so its users may run into this, but I haven't tested it with RemoveMacAI's own profile and haven't seen anyone report it. One difference: Siri's switch is on on my Mac, only so Spotlight keeps its new design (Siri itself says it isn't available), while RemoveMacAI turns Siri off unless it's kept. That switch might be what makes macOS want these models at all. On my Mac it was already trying to download UAF.FM.GenerativeModels a few hours before the update.

What the logs show

  1. The update finished downloading, and softwareupdated moved on to downloading optional assets before installing ("pre-SU staging"). None of them was required:

    That's also why Software Update showed 19.9 GB for the update: 6.2 GB of update and 13.7 GB of optional assets.

  2. The unblocked sets in the staging (UAF.IF.Planner, UAF.FM.Overrides, UAF.Siri.TextToSpeech) downloaded in seconds. The two blocked sets got "Connection refused" from the closed port and were retried with growing delays, logged as Stalled every 30 seconds:

    The blocked task's resource timeout was 3730 s (timeouts(120.0, 3730.0)), so each blocked download keeps trying for about an hour before it gives up. Meanwhile nothing else was downloading and the progress bar didn't move.

  3. Removing the profile didn't unstick the two downloads already running: they were still logged as Stalled 90 seconds later, when I restarted. After the restart they downloaded at once, Software Update started the update over (PurgingAllAssetsAtStartup discarded the 6.2 GB already downloaded), and 27.2 installed.

What got it through

Remove the profile, restart, update, then install the profile again and delete the models the update downloaded. With RemoveMacAI I'd expect that to be removemacai on, a restart, the update and removemacai off, but I haven't run those.

Not tested
  • Whether Software Update gives up on the blocked sets once their timeout runs out and installs anyway. I restarted after about 10 minutes.
  • Whether the full installer (softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer) skips the staging and avoids this.

A FAQ entry next to "Do macOS updates undo the changes?" might help, since nothing on screen points at the profile.
