Model picker shows "Select a project" despite a selected default Foundry project

Environment

  • Windows
  • Foundry Toolkit for VS Code (ms-windows-ai-studio.windows-ai-studio), version 1.6.19
  • A default Foundry project with two deployed chat models

Observed steps

  1. Select a default project in Foundry Toolkit with deployed chat models.
  2. Open the VS Code chat model picker.
  3. Choose "Microsoft Foundry via Foundry Toolkit".
  4. The picker shows "Select a Foundry project in Foundry Toolkit extension to use Foundry models" instead of the deployed models.

The issue persisted after a window reload in the observed session. These steps describe the observed scenario; reproducibility on a fresh installation has not been tested.

Expected behavior

The picker recognizes the selected default project and lists its supported deployed models without requiring a separate model-listing operation.

Actual behavior

The picker indicates no project is selected, even though Foundry Toolkit can retrieve the selected project and both deployments.

Verified workaround

Invoke foundrytk_list_foundry_models (registered tool name: foundrytk-list_foundry_models) to list the project's deployments. Wait at least 30 seconds, close the model picker completely, and reopen the Microsoft Foundry provider. Both deployments then appear.

No configuration, deployment, or authentication settings were changed.

Possible implementation cause (not confirmed)

Read-only inspection of the installed 1.6.19 extension bundle suggests:

  • AitkModelChatProvider caches model information, including placeholders, for 30 seconds.
  • The no-project placeholder resolver reads FoundryExtAccessor.getProject(), which reads cached project information.
  • FoundryExtAccessor maintains a separate configured-model cache.
  • AitkModelChatProvider exposes onDidChangeLanguageModelInformation, but no call to its changeLanguageModelInformation.fire was found in the installed bundle.

This may be a project initialization/cache refresh notification issue. The exact root cause requires maintainer confirmation.

Diagnostic evidence

The Foundry Toolkit output reported successful retrieval of the selected project and two models during troubleshooting. The picker subsequently displayed both models after the workaround.

Azure subscription IDs, resource names, endpoints, and authentication details are intentionally omitted.
