Línea de trabajo

The disabling path is in livekit-agents/livekit/agents/voice/room_io/_input.py around lines 180-184, where RoomIO drops input frames while detached. Trace how GPT-Live output pacing depends on incoming input audio, then compare with the mute_input() path, which keeps output running. Done means agent speech continues after set_audio_enabled(False), or the behaviour is documented, with a test covering the thinking-state case.

Descripción

Bug Description

While session.input.set_audio_enabled(False) is in effect, RoomIO drops input frames, which is expected. With GPT-Live, though, output is paced by the input audio, so the agent's speech also stops about 3.7–3.9 s later and only resumes once input is re-enabled. A common pattern, disabling input while the agent is thinking and re-enabling it when it leaves thinking, can then hang: after the tool finishes the agent can't speak its answer, and the state stays thinking.

Relevant code: RoomIO drops frames while detached

Expected Behavior

For duplex models, disabling input shouldn't stop output, e.g. keep sending silence while disabled, or use mute_input() instead. At least a warning or a note in the docs.

Reproduction Steps
1. Start an AgentSession with GPTLiveModel and ask a question.
2. Halfway through the answer, call session.input.set_audio_enabled(False).
3. Measure the agent's audio over the next 12 s.

Voice tests (audio input drops frames while disabled, as RoomIO does):

Agent audio in the next 12 s When speech stops
input left enabled 9.2–10.2 s keeps speaking
set_audio_enabled(False) 2.7–3.5 s 3.7–3.9 s after disabling (3/3)
mute_input() instead 9.3–10.0 s keeps speaking

With input disabled during thinking and an 8 s tool, the agent stayed in thinking without answering in 1 of 2 runs with set_audio_enabled, and answered in 2 of 2 with mute_input().

Additional Context

#7239 addressed the same root cause when there is no microphone (text mode) and was closed. This is the case with a real microphone where the app disables input.
