The payload does not name any source file, so start by reproducing on an X11 session with Muffin and comparing against Metacity, which the reporter says fixes it. The workaround QT_XCB_NO_XI2=1 points at XInput2 pointer event handling, and linuxmint/muffin#818 is a related XCB regression to read first. Done means the cursor updates on pointer enter between widgets without a click, verified on TeXstudio and LibreOffice.

Bug description

After upgrading Linux Mint to 22.3 on October 6, 2026, mouse cursor shapes frequently fail to update when moving between different regions of an application window.

The problem is particularly reproducible in TeXstudio 4.9.8, but also occurs intermittently in LibreOffice (GTK3 backend).

Steps to reproduce

For example, when opening a document in TeXstudio:

  1. The mouse cursor initially appears as an arrow throughout the application, including over the text editing pane, where it should be an I-beam.
  2. Clicking inside the editing pane changes the cursor to an I-beam.
  3. Moving the pointer over the menu bar or other widgets leaves it as an I-beam, even though it should change back to an arrow.
  4. Moving the pointer onto the desktop restores the correct cursor shape.
  5. Moving it back into TeXstudio immediately restores the previously displayed cursor shape, regardless of which widget the pointer enters.
    The problem occurs intermittently in other applications, including LibreOffice.

Diagnostic experiments:

  1. Confirmed that the session is X11 (XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11).
  2. Restarting Cinnamon with Alt+F2, "r" does not fix the problem.
  3. Starting TeXstudio with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb does not fix it.
  4. Starting TeXstudio with QT_XCB_NO_XI2=1 appears to fix it.
  5. Disabling the touchscreen, touchpad, and TrackPoint using xinput does not fix it.
  6. The problem persists when using different physical pointing devices.
  7. Replacing Muffin with Metacity using "metacity --replace &" fixes the problem in both TeXstudio and LibreOffice.

Expected behavior

The mouse cursor should change shape automatically when moving between widgets, without requiring a mouse click.

Additional information

The problem appeared after a substantial Linux Mint upgrade on October 6, 2026, which included:

  • Cinnamon 6.2.10 -> 6.6.9
  • Muffin 6.2.0 -> 6.6.3
  • cinnamon-settings-daemon 6.2.0 -> 6.6.4

The fact that replacing Muffin with Metacity immediately resolves the problem strongly suggests a regression involving Muffin's handling of X11 pointer events or cursor updates.

Possibly related: https://github.com/linuxmint/muffin/issues/818

That issue reports a different X11/XCB regression in Muffin 6.6.3, also resolved by replacing Muffin with Metacity.
