Línea de trabajo

Start at the HDR auto-promotion and capture_hdr_layered path named in the report, then trace how it captures and composites the extracted video frames. The report confirms the frame cache contains 300 distinct frames, so compare those with frames from the HDR layered output and use the SDR render as a control. Done means the HLG render preserves all source frames without duplicates.

Descripción

Summary

When a composition contains an HLG (HDR) <video>, the render auto-promotes to HDR and goes through the HDR layered composite path. In that path the output repeats video frames: about half of the frames are duplicates of the previous one, so playback visibly stutters. The same composition with an SDR copy of the same clip renders every frame correctly.

Reproduction

A blank project from npx hyperframes init with one full-frame video. No other elements or animation.

# 10 s, 30 fps HLG test clip (synthetic, so every source frame is distinct)
ffmpeg -f lavfi -i "testsrc2=size=1920x1080:rate=30" -f lavfi -i "sine=frequency=440" -t 10 \
  -c:v libx265 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le \
  -x265-params "colorprim=bt2020:transfer=arib-std-b67:colormatrix=bt2020nc" \
  -tag:v hvc1 -c:a aac -shortest assets/hlg.mp4

# SDR control clip
ffmpeg -f lavfi -i "testsrc2=size=1920x1080:rate=30" -f lavfi -i "sine=frequency=440" -t 10 \
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -shortest assets/clip.mp4
<div id="root" data-composition-id="main" data-start="0" data-duration="10" data-width="1920" data-height="1080">
  <video id="footage" class="clip" src="assets/hlg.mp4" data-start="0" data-duration="10"
         data-track-index="0" data-has-audio="true"></video>
</div>
<script>
  const tl = gsap.timeline({ paused: true });
  window.__timelines["main"] = tl;
  tl.seek(0);
</script>
npx hyperframes render --quality draft --output out.mp4

# count distinct frames (300 expected)
ffmpeg -i out.mp4 -vf "mpdecimate=hi=200:lo=100:frac=0.1,showinfo" -an -f null - 2>&1 | grep -c pts_time

Results

Source Distinct frames in output Render time
SDR H.264 (clip.mp4) 300 / 300 9.9 s
HLG HEVC 10-bit (hlg.mp4) 155 / 300 34.5 s
Real iPhone HLG recording (8-bit re-encode, HLG tags kept) 64 / 302 —

The log for the HLG run shows HDR auto-promotion triggered by "assets/hlg.mp4", then capture_hdr_layered with captureMode: screenshot, useLayeredComposite: true. The frames HyperFrames extracts into its frame cache are all distinct (checked: 300/300), so the repeats appear to come from the layered capture/composite step rather than from extraction.

--experimental-fast-capture=false, --workers 1, and an all-intra source (-g 1 -bf 0) did not change the result.

Expected

Every source frame appears once in the output, as with SDR input.

Environment

  • hyperframes 0.8.208 (also seen on 0.8.206)
  • macOS 15.7.9, Apple M1 Pro
  • Google Chrome 156.0.8078.48 (hardware GPU)
  • FFmpeg 8.1.1

Workaround

Tone-map the HLG clip to SDR BT.709 before using it in a composition. iPhones record HDR (HLG / Dolby Vision) by default, so phone footage hits this path without the author choosing HDR.
